The road so far: whitesky.cloud

Hello, there! We’re so glad to have you here as we take a look at the various drivers and motivations that have made whitesky.cloud what it is today.

Our goal is simple: we want to make operating on the cloud more accessible. How? Good question. The whitesky.cloud platform is a pay-per-use, white label cloud computing solution designed specifically for integrators, telecom, and service providers. It allows companies to set up their own platform quickly, without any investment in hard- or software, and it’s tailored to meet their needs.

Understanding all of this, we wanted to find a way to deliver a more accessible, affordable experience to the companies that weren’t being properly served by the private cloud market. As we started to have discussions, the telco model of offering lightweight, cost-effective solutions (alongside their more robust products) came to mind. What if we created a solution that put the cloud in the hands of our customers, without the need for expensive hardware and resources?

That’s where the idea for whitesky.cloud emerged. Since then, we’ve developed a proof of concept, which was fully fleshed out in December 2020. We’ve grown our team over the last year, putting a heightened focus on business development and marketing so that we can attract and inform the right customers, and empower them to grow. We’ve also expanded our customer base significantly, with a number of companies using our platform to run their day-to-day operations.

Why? Another good question. As you might know, whitesky.cloud is a GIG.tech brand. During our years running GIG.tech – a cloud-as-a-service provider that helps companies stand up their private cloud environments from top to bottom – we learned a lot about what it takes to build effective clouds. We also learned that not all companies can afford to set up their own clouds; buying the hardware and digital solutions you need is expensive, and bringing in the right skills (whether they’re in-house or outsourced) can take a lot of time and money.

Not only that, access to the right skills (e.g. OpenStack specialists) is largely limited to large European and North American regions, leaving companies in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East fairly strapped when it comes to finding people who can build and run their cloud environments. That, paired with minimal budgets allocated to cloud computing in those regions, means that there’s no real cloud solution available to companies in burgeoning economies.

The platform removes the barriers to private cloud computing, helping companies to keep their data private while still accessing the power of the cloud – but not having to invest more than they need to in it. It allows users (virtual cloud operators or VCOs) to continue building their business entirely on the cloud and establish their own pricing model based on what they use on the platform.

We’ve thought carefully about how we want to serve underserved regions like Africa and Asia. Our plan is to bring the cloud to where the people are who need it: in the big cities and urban centers. Rather than take a hyperscaler approach, we’re enabling and empowering the companies that need it, and positioning them to tap into their growth opportunities.

So, there you have it. The story of how we came to be. If you have any questions about it or what we’re up to now, get in touch. We’re always open for a chat.
