Platform Update July 2024 – Introducing Physical Storage for VMs

Physical Storage for Virtual Machines

The software-defined storage for vDisks, which has been the only option to configure via the portal so far, offers many great features such as snapshots, clones, and machine images.

Additionally, due to its distribution across all storage servers and devices, it is extremely durable and storage-efficient thanks to the underlying erasure coding technology.
However, it is served over a storage network backplane that involves many components, each introducing some latency.

For certain application workloads, having high-throughput, low-latency storage is crucial. Examples include databases and CDN workloads.

Previously, you had to rely on whitesky.cloud support to create physical storage volumes, but no more. We are most excited to introduce the new physical storage option through the portal for adding disks to a virtual machine. These disks leverage Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) technology directly attached to the virtual machine, providing extremely low latency and high bandwidth storage.

Upcoming in August 2024

  • Localized portal introducing French, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese
  • WireGuard for Connected Cloudspaces
  • VPN access to Cloudspaces via WireGuard

Our team has been busy exterminating bugs, adding validations and improving internal tooling. All in the quest of a smoother experience.

Happy computing!
