Seamless Updates

The combination of live migration and an n+1 spare server in every block is what makes updates non-disruptive: before a server is updated, its running VMs and vDisks migrate live to other servers in the block, the server is updated and rebooted, and workloads migrate back. Applied as a rolling update across the block, this updates everything — including the host OS — without interrupting workloads.

Some maintenance does require a controlled event — for example, migrating a VM between servers with different CPU generations can require a scheduled restart of that VM. These cases are planned and communicated rather than ad-hoc, so disruption stays predictable.
